Five questions diners and venue owners ask most: what match rate means, how it differs from star ratings, what claiming a venue unlocks, what it costs, and whether diners ever pay.

What is "match rate"?

Match rate is the share of group swiping sessions in which you landed on a restaurant that your friends also liked. On BiteFlip you start a six-character code session, invite a few friends, and everyone swipes through nearby places on their own phone. A match lights up the moment two or more of you swipe right on the same spot — and match rate is the percentage of your sessions that produced at least one of those overlaps.

It's a more honest signal than star ratings because it stretches across the people you actually eat with, not the strangers who reviewed the restaurant last year. A high match rate means your crew keeps agreeing on places; a low match rate is a nudge to widen the cuisine range or swap who's at the table.

How is match rate different from star ratings?

Star ratings are one-directional. A reviewer handed the restaurant four stars, you never met that reviewer, and you've never sat in their section. Match rate is bidirectional and live — it's the overlap between your swipe and the swipes of the people you're about to share a table with, computed during the same session.

BiteFlip still pulls star ratings from Google Places so you know what you're looking at on each card, but the number you should care most about is whether the people in your group session align. That's why the recap loop asks you to rate the meal after you eat — the rating tunes the stack you see next time, while match rate tracks what survived the group decision.

What does claiming a venue do for me?

Claiming a venue is how a restaurant owner takes ownership of their public stats page inside BiteFlip. You start the claim flow at /venue-claim, verify you control the venue, and your stats — save rate, match rate, recap sentiment — become available to you in a dashboard.

Without a claim, you can still see your restaurant listed in the catalog, but the analytics stay locked. With a claim, the recap feed (loved / okay / nah) from diners who swiped right on you becomes your signal: which nights your match rate dips, which cuisines your diners keep picking, and which friend groups keep saving you.

How much does it cost for venue owners?

BiteFlip's venue-owner side is a subscription product with three tiers — Starter, Growth, and Pro — all listed on the /pricing page. Starter is built for single locations; Growth unlocks multi-location trend charts and CSV export; Pro adds API access and quarterly group-session reports for high-volume operators.

Diners never see your tier. Pricing is monthly per venue and you can upgrade or downgrade as your diner signal changes. The plans are designed so a single-location restaurant can sit on Starter for years and only step up when the data starts telling a story they actually want to study.

Is BiteFlip free for diners?

Yes. The diner-facing side — swiping, joining group sessions, matching with friends, sending recaps — is free. You install the app, create an account, swipe, match, eat, and recap the meal without ever seeing a paywall. There is no per-swipe fee, no premium tier that hides features, and no upsell screen between you and your next match.

BiteFlip is monetized through the venue-owner subscription on the marketing side. The diner experience stays open because the diner signal is the product the venue side pays to understand — you being able to swipe and recap freely is what makes the analytics on the other side of the wall meaningful.
